Wärtsilä will supply advanced energy storage solutions with a total capacity of 200 MW to Able Grid Energy Solutions. This will entail two interconnected stand-alone systems, Madero and Ignacio, in southern Texas in United States. The energy storage systems will be supplied to Able Grid Energy Solutions, Inc. (“Able Grid”) as per an order placed by the company in February 2021.

The Madero and Ignacio energy storage plants will provide grid support to the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT). The systems are expected to be operational by January 2022. Wärtsilä has also signed ten-year guaranteed asset performance agreements for the installations which include maintenance services, an availability guarantee, and a flexible capacity guarantee based on usage.

Able Grid, which is a utility-scale energy storage project development arm of MAP RE/ES, one of North America’s leading investors in modern energy projects, will provide construction management and operational asset management services for the facility. The entire facility is owned by a privately held energy storage power producer.

Wärtsilä’s energy storage system, GridSolv Quantum, is a fully integrated modular solution. It will also feature the company GEMS smart energy management platform to monitor and control power supply. This will help ERCOT in improving grid support especially during extreme weather or grid instability conditions.
