Vestas has been awarded a contract for supplying turbines to the 113 MW Sumita Tono Wind Farm in Japan. The site for the project is located in difficult hilly terrain in the Iwate prefecture.

To accommodate the site’s challenging transport, wind, and seismic load conditions, Vestas has developed a customised tower solution for the project. This will involve some of the tallest hub heights for any wind turbines above 4 MW rating in the country. .

Green Power Investment Corporation (GPI) will develop the project. Meanwhile, Vestas will supply and install 27 V117-4.2MW turbines, 23 of which will be put on 114-meter towers and the other four on 94-meter towers. Vestas will also provide a multi-year Active Output Management 5000 (AOM 5000) service agreement for the wind farm, ensuring optimised performance and long-term comprehensive business certainty for the operator.

The turbines will be delivered in the first quarter of 2022, with commissioning scheduled for the fourth quarter. It will be the first partnership between Vestas and, GPI the Japanese partner of the US-based Pattern Energy Group LP, which has been focused on designing, building, and managing renewable projects in Japan since 2004. This order will also enable Japan to contribute to its net zero target and demonstrate its ability to create the optimum solution for its people.
