Following a spectacular 2020, resulting in 11.9 GW of added solar capacity and catapulting the country into the top 3 solar markets globally, the PV sector in Vietnam saw a dramatic collapse in 2021. Taiwan reached the GW level for the first time in 2019, adding 1.41 GW, which is equal to an annual growth of 45% and results in a total cumulative capacity above 4 GW. On the cumulative side, Taiwan had 7.7 GW of solar PV installation at the end of 2021, 12% short of its target.

Vietnam to auction 400 MW of floating solar projects

Vietnam backed by the Asian Development Bank has proposed launching tenders for 400 MW of floating solar projects in the country. Renewable energy developers will be able to bid for 50-100 MW under the first batch and 300 MW in the second batch. The ADB is looking for six consultants with environmental, social, and financial expertise to support the auction.

Vsun announces large module and cell manufacturing plans for Vietnam

Vsun, which is a unit of Japan-based electrical equipment company Fuji Solar Co Ltd, is planning to set up a solar cell and module manufacturing facility in the Hoà Phú Industrial Zone in the Bắc Giang province, in the northeast part of Vietnam. The factory is expected to be built by end-2022 and to have an annual solar module production capacity of 4 GW and a cell capacity of 2 GW.
