Inflation Reduction Act to boost US solar deployment by 62 GW

The US solar industry installed 4.6 gigawatts-direct current (GWdc) of capacity in the second quarter of 2022, a 12% decrease from Q2 2021 and a 12% increase from Q1 2022. Across the solar industry, second quarter volumes would have been higher if not for supply chain constraints and the industry-wide slowdown from March through June, caused by the initiation of the anticircumvention investigation.

These 4 charts show the state of renewable energy in 2022

Nothing, it seems, can hold back the advance of renewable energy. A record amount of renewable capacity was installed in 2021, despite post-pandemic delays and rising raw material costs. Now the International Energy Agency (IEA) expects that record to be beaten again in 2022, at least in part as nations that have relied on fossil fuels from Russia, push ahead with new renewable capacity in response to the war in Ukraine.

United States Solar Market Trends 2021

The US solar industry had another record-setting year in 2021, with 23.6 gigawatts-direct current (GWdc) of capacity installed. Despite numerous challenges throughout 2021, the industry easily exceeded 20 GWdc, and is expected to maintain that level of annual deployment for the foreseeable future. Overall, solar PV accounted for 46% of all new electricity-generating capacity additions in 2021. This represents the third year in a row that solar has made up the largest share of new generating capacity in the US.

US community solar market will bring 4.5 GWdc online over the next five years

US community solar is set to get a boost from expanded state-level programs enacted in the last six months. Community solar refers to local facilities shared by multiple community subscribers, such as homeowners, renters and businesses. Each subscriber receives credits on their electricity bills for their share of the power produced. We expect a peak in installations over the next few years. Volumes decrease after 2023 once pipelines under current incentive regimes begin to dwindle and the Investment Tax Credit (ITC) drops down to 10%.

Sunny days ahead: Southeast Asia’s solar market is poised for strong growth

Important solar markets in the region with large installed solar capacities after Vietnam are Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines with 2,988 MW, 1,493 MW and 1,048 MW of installed capacities respectively. In addition, Singapore (329 MW) and Indonesia (172 MW) are emerging as other attractive destinations for solar investments with many large and small projects under development.

United States: Congress Cannot Ignore Residential Solar Tax Credit Inequities

Through the Justice40 Initiative, President Biden has made clear that bringing clean energy benefits to marginalized and low-income communities is a priority. Right now, low-income households experience up to three times higher energy burden (the percent of household income spent on energy costs) than high-income households. Rooftop solar is one of many important solutions available to help alleviate this burden.

The significance of low residential solar-plus-storage adoption in New Jersey

New Jersey is an example of a state that lacks the right cocktail of incentives and grid reliability issues to move quickly out of the nascent, “early adopter”- only market stage – where  most  homeowners aren’t yet opting to install batteries in their homes, and many solar installers do not pitch storage. Looking at detailed vendor and installer data, Wood Mackenzie finds that New Jersey’s market has a few key characteristics that are consistent with the state’s low solar-plus-storage demand.

Rooftop solar to roll out on China’s public buildings

At the end of 2020, distributed solar accounted for about 78 GW (30%) of the 253 GW of China’s installed solar generation capacity, according to data from the country’s National Energy Administration. Growth in distributed solar appears to be picking up in proportion to growth in solar farms. In the first half of this year, about 13 GW of new solar power capacity was installed, 7.65 GW of that distributed solar.
