Wind turbine waste from decommissioning parts will increase in the coming decade as wind turbines installed in the early 2000s reach their end-of-life. By the end of 2010, global wind power capacity reached 180GW, more than 10 times that of end-2000. As much as an increase in wind power means well to reduce carbon emissions from the energy sector, markets globally will soon have to deal with wind turbines that have reached their end-of-life.

US firm wins 240 MW wind repowering contract in Illinois

Vitol has granted a $70 million balance of plant contract to a subsidiary of US contractor Infrastructure and Energy Alternatives (IEA) for the 240 MW Big Sky wind farm repowering in the US state of Illinois. The repowering of the Big Sky wind farm in Bureau and Lee Counties will begin in August 2021 and is scheduled to be finished in July 2022.

Exus to repower 240 MW wind plant in Illinois

Exus Management Partners has won the contract to lead the repowering of the 240 MW Big Sky Wind Farm in Illinois. Earlier this year the project was acquired by Vitol from a BlackRock-managed fund. Exus will now be a part of Vitol’s $250 million plan to upgrade the project, increasing Big Sky’s annual energy output by 60 per cent by the end of 2022. Under the scheme, highly efficient Vestas wind turbines will be installed using the existing foundations and towers.
