Growing pressure for EU to step up its 2030 climate goals

The EU’s statistical office of the European Union Eurostat just published its statistics on the share of renewable energy sources in the electricity, heating & cooling and transport sector in 2020. With a 22.1% share of energy consumed from renewable sources in 2020, the EU has reached its headline target of 20% for that year. There is now a need for structural changes for an energy transition based on 100% renewables.

Trane Technologies plans to half its product carbon emissions by 2030

Trane Technologies plans to cut its product carbon emissions by nearly 50 per cent by 2030. The company’s emissions reduction targets have been validated by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). The targets support Trane Technologies’ 2030 Sustainability Commitments, including its Gigaton Challenge to reduce customer emissions by one billion metric tons. It also supports the Paris Agreement goal to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, which will require net-zero global carbon emissions by 2050.

United States pledges $100 million for clean energy R&D

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has pledged about $100 million to fund research and development of transformative clean energy technology. The announcement is in line with the newly formed government’s agenda to curb climate change. The funding will be used to identify innovative clean energy technology to combat the climate crisis. The DOE also announced that it would participate in the National Climate Task Force’s Climate Innovation Working Group. Through this, it aims to coordinate government-wide efforts in developments such as net-zero carbon buildings, battery storage, lower-cost green hydrogen, and direct air capture to help the United States reach net-zero emissions by 2050.
