The Department of the Interior has announced results from the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management’s wind energy auction for five leases offshore California. The lease sale represents the third major offshore wind lease sale this year and the first ever for the Pacific region. The sale drew competitive high bids from 5 companies totaling $757.1 million, well exceeding the first lease sales that were held in the Atlantic.

Cbus acquires 2.2 GW offshore wind facility in Australia

Cbus Super, an Australian superannuation fund, has acquired a 10 per cent stake in Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners’ (CIP) 2.2 GW Star of the South offshore wind project. This follows Cbus’ investment in CIP’s flagship fund, CI IV, which owns the majority stake in Star of the South. No financial details of the deal have been disclosed. Star of the South will be constructed off the coast of Victoria’s Gippsland.

The new regime enables the Minister, on an interim basis, to issue Maritime Area Consents (MACs) to renewable energy developers who meet the relevant assessment criteria. Developers must have a Maritime Area Consent to make an application for permission, to include environmental assessments, to An Bord Pleanála.

ScotWind offshore wind leasing delivers major boost to Scotland’s net zero aspirations

Crown Estate Scotland has announced the outcome of its application process for ScotWind Leasing, the first Scottish offshore wind leasing round in over a decade and the first ever since the management of offshore wind rights were devolved to Scotland. 17 projects have been selected out of a total of 74 applications, and have now been offered option agreements which reserve the rights to specific areas of seabed. A total of just under £700m will be paid by the successful applicants in option fees and passed to the Scottish Government for public spending.
