PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna SA, a Polish utility, has chosen Societe Generale SA, a French bank, to act as its adviser in acquiring finance for the development of the 2.5-GW Baltica offshore wind project off the coast of Poland. Poland’s Energy Regulatory Office has announced that developers, Equinor and Polenergia were awarded contracts for difference (CfD) for the Baltyk II and Baltyk III projects under the first phase of Poland’s offshore wind development scheme. The projects have a combined potential capacity of 1.44 GW. The announcement represents a breakthrough for Equinor in Poland and supports the country’s ambitions to transform its energy mix. The two projects will help build an offshore wind hub in the Baltic Sea.

The Polish Energy Regulatory Office has awarded a Contract for Difference (CfD) to the Baltica Offshore Wind Farm which is reported to be the largest offshore wind project in the Polish part of the Baltic Sea. Its two phases, Baltica 3 and Baltica 2, would together have a cumulative capacity of up to 2.5 GW. The CfD was awarded at a maximum of PLN 319.60/MWh in accordance with the Decree of the Minister of Climate and Environment of Poland and the Offshore Wind Act.

Northland Power Inc. has signed an agreement with PKN ORLEN S.A. acquiring a share of 49 per cent, subject to regulatory approvals, in the Baltic Power offshore wind project in the Baltic Sea with a cumulative offshore wind capacity of up to 1.2 GW. The Baltic Power project is already under development and is located about 23 km off the coast of Poland.

Spanish multinational electric utility company, Iberdola has announced the acquisition of a 50 per cent stake in offshore wind company, Sea Wind. The two companies are set to jointly develop a project portfolio of 7.3 GW going forward. The move marks Iberdola’s entry into the Polish market and is expected to drive the company’s expansion.

If we look at the initiatives so far in the country, there are 10 different wind farm projects of which seven already have grid connectivity. This would amount to 11 GW of renewable capacity. We are currently working on the Offshore Wind Act and we aim to have the act adopted as soon as possible and brought in to force by 2021.
