UK, Netherlands plan 2 GW cross-border offshore wind link

National Grid and TenneT have unveiled plans for LionLink, an innovative cross-border direct current cable that will connect offshore wind between the UK and the Netherlands.  The LionLink project is a multi-purpose or hybrid interconnector that will connect up to 2 GW of offshore wind capacity between the British and Dutch electricity systems. It will be only the second hybrid interconnector in the world and significantly larger than its predecessor, Germany and Denmark’s 400 MW Kriegers Flag link that connects two offshore substations in the Baltic Sea.

Holistic Network Design: A key step for achieving 50 GW offshore wind in the UK by 2030

In July 2022, the country’s electricity system operator, National Grid Electricity System Operator (NGESO), released its ‘Pathway to 2030’ Holistic Network Design (HND). This is part of the government’s Offshore Transmission Network Review (OTNR) efforts to find appropriate solutions in the medium term. The HND sets out a single, integrated design to support the transmission of large-scale offshore wind generation to load centres across Great Britain.

Holistic Network Design for Offshore Wind in UK: Report

The Holistic Network Design Report gives detail on the recommended approach for connecting the in scope offshore wind farms, including the needs associated with the offshore transmission network and the onshore transmission network. The HND includes the offshore transmission network, the onshore works essential to facilitate each connection and the network needed to transport the electricity around the country.

UK’s National Grid relies on offshore wind to help stabilise the grid

For the first time, the National Grid ESO in the UK has issued a contract to an offshore wind farm to maintain stable voltage levels in the power network. From 2024, the Dogger Bank C offshore wind farm’s transmission assets will supply 200 megavolt amperes of reactive power (MVAr), which is used to ensure network stability.

National Grid to launch a 1.8 GW cable link between the UK and Norway

National Grid, the British transmission system operator, is proposing to launch a 1.8 GW high voltage direct current for offshore wind projects. The new power cable will link Norway and the UK. The “continental link” may connect 3.6 GW of offshore wind projects and deliver electricity for 1.8 million households in the UK.
