ADB and Japan enhance their joint efforts to promote clean energy in ASEAN Region

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) have signed a memorandum of cooperation (MOC) for clean energy promotion in South-East Asia. The cooperation, under the Cleaner Energy Future Initiative for ASEAN (CEFIA), will strengthen their efforts in the areas that focus on energy transition including renewable energy, energy conservation and efficiency.

Panasonic to close its solar cell and module manufacturing business

Japanese electronics company, Panasonic Corporation has announced that it will look to shut down the production capacity for solar products at its facilities in Malaysia and Japan by the end of the financial year 2022. The company currently manufactures solar wafers, cells, and modules at its facility in Malaysia. It will look to liquidate its subsidiary, Panasonic Solar Energy Malaysia, and lay off its employees by March 2022.

Japan’s renewable energy auctions are price-centred: IRENA

Japan is a country which relies mainly on fossil fuels to meet its energy needs. However, the events at the nuclear power plant in Fukushima following the 2011 earthquake and tsunami have shifted energy policies towards greater renewables adoption. While a FiT scheme was launched earlier, this gave way to auctions in 2017, which have since the key policy instrument driving the Japan’s transition to renewables.

Vestas to acquire Mitsubishi’s 50% stake in their offshore JV

Vestas and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) have closed the agreement to expand their partnership in sustainable energy. By closing the agreement, Vestas has acquired MHI’s shares in the MHI Vestas Offshore Wind (MVOW) joint venture, while MHI has acquired 2.5 per cent in Vestas and will be nominated to a seat in Vestas’ Board of Directors.

Japan’s sixth solar auction delivers final lowest price of 10 yen per unit

The METI has announced the results of the sixth auction for solar projects with a generation capacity of more than 250 kW. It has selected 255 projects with a combined capacity of 368.8 MW in the procurement exercise, after having initially accepted project proposals with a combined capacity of 526.5 MW for review. The capacity of these projects ranges from 300 kW to 68.6 MW.
