Review of Barriers to FPV Deployment in Southeast Asia

FPV systems may play a significant role in RE deployment in the region, while providing additional economic, societal, and environmental benefits. Recent work has identified the potential benefits of FPV systems to include lower land acquisition and site preparation costs, improved solar PV performance, and reduced capital costs when FPV is co-located with hydropower. Despite growing interest in and literature on FPV systems, the understanding of the policy landscape, including the opportunities and barriers to FPV deployment, remains limited.

Portugal to auction 500 MW of floating solar capacity

Portugal announced that it would conduct its third solar auction in September as it looks to allocate 500 MW of floating solar capacity. Through the current tender, which resulted in record-low prices, the country aims to support the deployment of floating solar on at least seven reservoirs through its next tender process. The proposed plants will be located next to hydropower plants so that existing grid infrastructure can be used. One of the selected dams, Alto Rabagão, already hosts a 220 kWp floating solar pilot project developed by EDP.

Cleaning techniques for floating solar systems

Dust and soils have negative impacts on the efficiency of PV panels. Therefore, the importance of cleaning PV panels is considerable from both economic and performance points of view. A key factor to maximizing the economic advantage is the determination of cleaning times. There is no specified cleaning cycle for PV panels, and the soiling rate of the region mostly determines the cleaning frequency.

Vietnam to auction 400 MW of floating solar projects

Vietnam backed by the Asian Development Bank has proposed launching tenders for 400 MW of floating solar projects in the country. Renewable energy developers will be able to bid for 50-100 MW under the first batch and 300 MW in the second batch. The ADB is looking for six consultants with environmental, social, and financial expertise to support the auction.

Floatovoltaics: Land-constrained SEA countries look to waterbodies for sustainable power generation

The unavailability of large swathes of land has forced developers in the solar power segment to look elsewhere to set up solar power plants in a more sustainable manner. In this regard, canal tops, hybrid power and other such technologies have emerged as important solutions. A recent phenomenon of this is also the emergence of floating solar power plants, or floatovoltaics, which have found a considerable market in the Southeast Asian region.
