Spearmint Energy acquires 900 MW BESS portfolio in US

Spearmint Energy announced the acquisition of Nomadic, a 900 MW battery energy storage systems (BESS) asset portfolio in Texas. It consists of three projects with a combined projected capacity of 300 MW that are spread over the counties of Cooke, Galveston, and Brazoria. According to the company, the portfolio was purchased from a major US developer and operator of clean energy projects. No financial details of the deal have been disclosed.

Infinity Power acquires a 100 per cent stake in Lekela Power in Africa

Infinity Power, an Egyptian-Emirati energy company, has acquired a 100 per cent share in Lekela Power in Africa, adding 1 GW of renewable capacity to its portfolio. Lekela, which has its headquarters in the Netherlands, has a project pipeline of 1.8 GW and currently manages 1 GW of wind energy projects in South Africa, Egypt, and Senegal.

ACWA Power to develop solar and BESS projects in Uzbekistan

ACWA Power has signed three power purchase and investment agreements in Uzbekistan for the development of 1.4 GW of solar and 1.5 GWh of battery energy storage systems (BESS). The Saudi energy company inked the agreement with Uzbekistan’s National Electric Grid (NEGU) and the Ministry of Investment, Industry, and Trade. The business intends to construct three PV solar projects in Tashkent and Samarkand, as well as three BESS facilities in Tashkent, Bukhara, and Samarkand.

ACEN Australia inaugurates the first phase of 720 MW solar project in NSW

ACEN Australia has begun construction on stage I of the 720 MW New England Solar project in New South Wales (NSW), Australia. Australia’s Federal Minister for Climate Change, officially opened the project. The NSW state government approved the project’s first of two stages, which has a 400 MW capacity in 2020. This stage includes about one million solar panels and has been under development since March 2021.

Lhyfe and Centrica to develop offshore renewable green hydrogen in the UK

Lhyfe and Centrica have agreed to jointly develop offshore renewable green hydrogen in the UK in a first for the country. The companies have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) that could accelerate green hydrogen as part of the energy transition in the UK. Under the agreement, Lhyfe and Centrica will combine their expertise to collaborate on a pilot green hydrogen production site in the Southern North Sea.

Hounen to build 1 GW solar module factory in US

Zhejiang Hounen Photoelectricity Co Ltd (Hounen), a Chinese solar panel producer, plans to invest $33 million in a proposal to construct its first solar panel factory in the US. The governor’s office of South Carolina has confirmed Hounen’s plans. Hounen Solar plans to lease a 200,720 sq ft facility in Orangeburg County, South Carolina, in order to set up a 1 GW production base here.

Avangrid starts developing two solar projects in Texas and Ohio

Avangrid, a US-based energy company, has started the construction of two solar facilities in Texas and Ohio. The combined clean energy output from the Texas True North and Ohio Powell Creek projects will be 523.5 MW. True North, which is being built in Falls County, Texas, will start producing 321MW of power in the early 2025 timeframe. The project is anticipated to provide more than 200 employment during construction.

Oman signs an agreement for $20 billion of green hydrogen projects

Oman has signed binding commercial term sheets for six projects involving green hydrogen that will require investments of around $20 billion. The Hyport Duqm consortium, Green Energy Oman, ACME’s Green Hydrogen and Chemicals SPC, and the SalalaH2 consortium will all collaborate on developing the projects. More than 700,000 tonnes of green hydrogen are anticipated to be produced at the plants, which will be close to the ports in Salalah in the south and Duqm in central Oman

BlackRock’s CFP fund acquires stake in 310 MW wind farm in Kenya

Climate Finance Partnership (CFP), a BlackRock Alternatives-managed fund, has acquired a 31.25 per cent stake in Lake Turkana Wind Power, a 310 MW wind project in Kenya. For an undisclosed sum, the stake was bought from Vestas, Finnfund, and the Investment Fund for Developing Countries. According to a regulatory filing published in Kenyan press, the Lake Turkana Wind Power project is located in Kenya’s far north region and is equipped with 365 wind turbines.

Vestas receives 373 MW wind turbine contract in South Africa

Vestas, a Danish wind turbine manufacturer, has received a 373 MW wind turbine contract from Red Rocket, a South African independent power producer. The company will provide five V162-6.2MW Enventus turbines, 12 V163-4.5MW turbines, and 64 V150-4.5MW wind turbines. The turbines will be installed at the Brandvalley, Rietkloof and Wolf wind parks, which are located in South Africa’s Western and Eastern Capes. Vestas intends to deliver and commission the wind turbines by 2024.

Ørsted and Eversource Energy have submitted a combined proposal to build the Revolution Wind II offshore wind farm in Rhode Island, US. The proposal for the 884 MW wind project was filed in response to the state’s offshore wind solicitation. Oman Power and Water Procurement Company awarded the contract to the company (OPWP). China Energy to launch $5.1 billion green hydrogen plant in Egypt

China Energy intends to start construction on a $5.1 billion green hydrogen project in Egypt in May 2023. Reportedly,  the Chinese investor will send a team from the company to go through the project’s details in April 2023. As previously announced, the project will be developed in two phases and will feature a solar and wind power plant, electrolysers for hydrogen production, ammonia synthesis devices, and accompanying storage and processing facilities.

US BOEM Proposes First Offshore Wind Auction in the Gulf of Mexico

On February 24, 2023, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) published a Proposed Sale Notice (PSN) in the Federal Register that includes three proposed lease areas in the Gulf of Mexico for offshore wind development. One lease area is in the Lake Charles Wind Energy Area (WEA), offshore of Lake Charles, Louisiana, and two are in the Galveston WEA, offshore of Galveston, Texas.

Drax hires Studio Pietrangeli to build pumped storage plant

Drax, a UK-based electric services company, has hired hydro-engineering consultant Studio Pietrangeli to enhance the layout of its Cruachan pumped storage expansion. The new underground pumped hydro facility, with a 600 MW capacity, will be constructed next to Drax’s current Cruachan complex in Argyll, Scotland. According to the agreement, Studio Pietrangeli will operate as the project’s owner’s engineer and provide assistance with vital tasks including optimising the layout and design of the new facility.

Duke Energy starts operations at 250 MW solar facility in Texas

Duke Energy Sustainable Solutions (DESS), a subsidiary of the US-based energy corporation Duke Energy, has begun operations at its Pisgah Ridge Solar facility in Navarro County, Texas. The 250 MW project employed up to 300 individuals during its construction phase. DESS will own and operate the project, while Moss managed the engineering and construction operations. Three virtual power purchase agreements (VPPAs) with Charles River Laboratories International, Midwest retailer Meijer, and one unnamed entity are already in place for the Pisgah Ridge Solar plant.
