This slide deck was developed for and presented at an Energy Fundamentals Course hosted by the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) helped organize this course in partnership with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). While some of the content in the slide deck is tailored to Bangladesh specifically, this presentation is intended to be a general primer on electric vehicles that can be utilized for similar purposes by other universities or organizations throughout the world.

ZEBs and related infrastructure: Germany’s attempts to reduce GhG emissions from public transport

Around 80,000 buses are currently registered in Germany, of which 40,000–55,000 are deployed in the public transport sector. The majority of the buses are still powered by diesel engines. In order to achieve the climate targets of both Germany and Europe, the fleet emission and minimum procurement targets have been tightened at the national and European levels. As per the Clean Vehicle Directive, by 2025, 45 per cent of new purchases must be ‘clean vehicles’, and half of them (22.5 per cent) should be emission-free.

Building a zero-emission goods-movement system in Canada

Several jurisdictions across Canada have already adopted strategies to increase ZEV uptake. In Quebec, the 2015–2020 Plan d’action en electrification des transports includes measures to promote electric transportation, develop the industry, and create a favorable environment. Similarly, the City of Toronto’s 2020 Electric Vehicle Strategy assists the strategy’s goal of transportation using 100% zero-carbon energy sources by 2050.
