Amazon procures record 8.3 GW of clean energy in 2022

Amazon has recently announced that in 2022 it grew its renewable energy capacity by 8.3 GW through 133 new projects in 11 countries. This brings Amazon’s total portfolio to more than 20 GW—that could generate the amount of energy to power 5.3 million U.S. homes—across 401 renewable energy projects in 22 countries. Brazil connects 6.5 GW of non-hydro renewables in 2022

According to the power sector regulator Aneel, Brazil has approved 6,504.7 MW of wind, solar, and biomass power facilities to start operating in 2022. In total, the country added 8,235.1 MW of capacity in 2022, far exceeding the goal of 7,625 MW established for the relevant time. Wind farms supplied 2,922.5 MW, while solar and biomass-fired plants supplied 2,677.3 MW and 904.9 MW, respectively. The remaining 1,355.7 MW and 374.6 MW were generated by thermal power facilities using fossil fuels.

Equinor makes final investment decision for solar farm in Brazil

Equinor, a Norwegian energy company, has made a final investment decision on the 531 MW Mendubim solar project in Brazil. Mendubim, a joint venture project between Scatec, Hydro Rein, and Equinor, is situated in Rio Grande do Norte. The project will generate about 1.2 TWh of energy annually, which is enough to power 620,000 Brazilian houses.

JinkoSolar to supply 522 MW of modules for solar projects in Brazil

JinkoSolar Holding, a China-based manufacturer of solar panels, has secured a cell module contract through Jinko Solar for supply to the Santa Luzia Complex. The contract is with Rio Alto for the supply of about 522 MW of cell modules. According to the agreement, Jinko Solar will provide Tiger Neo 78 Cell modules for the early phase of the solar project.

Lightsource bp, a solar project developer, has completed financing for its 210 MW Milagres Solar project in Brazil for $148.7 million. The Northeast Development Fund (Fundo de Desenvolvimento do Nordeste, or FDNE), which is run by the Brazilian government agency Superintendência de Desenvolvimento do Nordeste (Sudene), received debt funding of $78.6 million from Banco do Brasil.

Canadian Solar has agreed to sell its 70 per cent stake in Brazil’s Marangatu and Panati-Sitiá solar farms to SPIC Brasil for an undisclosed sum. Green Investment Group (GIG), a Macquarie-owned company, and Hydro Rein have agreed to form a joint venture to build and operate a 586 MW wind and solar power plant in Brazil’s northeast. The wind and solar hybrid project, named Feijo, will be developed in the Brazilian states of Piaui and Pernambuco. Feijo will be equipped with 80 wind turbines by Nordex, a wind turbine manufacturer.
