EWEC invites EoI for 1.5 GW of solar PV project in Abu Dhabi

The Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has invited developers to submit expressions of interest (EOIs) for a 1.5 GW solar photovoltaic (PV) project in Abu Dhabi. The Al Ajban Solar PV project would be built in the Ajban area of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. The solar project will have the capacity to power nearly 160,000 homes across the UAE once it is operational, displacing more than 2.4 million tonnes of carbon dioxide each year.

UAE’s Power Sector: Transitioning to a clean and smart grid

United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) power production has long been driven by hydrocarbons. However, in recent years, the country has been focusing on clean power in a bid to cater to its ever-growing power demand and to save costs associated with it. These goals are clearly reflected in the UAE’s Energy Plan for 2050, which was announced in 2017. The Energy Plan envisages the production of 44 per cent of power from renewables, 6 per cent from nuclear, 12 per cent from clean coal and the rest from natural gas by 2050.

Masdar commissions Abu Dhabi’s largest solar-powered car park

Abu-Dhabi based clean energy company Masdar and Abu Dhabi Airports, the owner and operator of the emirate’s five airports have announced the completion of the 3 MW solar PV project at Abu Dhabi International Airport. This is reported to be Abu Dhabi’s largest solar-powered car park. The project has been set up on the car shading at the short-term car park at the Midfield Terminal.

Masdar City plans to launch pilot green hydrogen project

Masdar City has announced that it is developing a pilot green hydrogen project in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy, Etihad Airways, Khalifa University of Science and Technology, Siemens Energy, Marubeni, and the Lufthansa Group. The eloctrolyser used in the project will be solar-powered and will be constructed in Masdar, Abu Dhabi. The project will aim at producing green hydrogen and sustainable fuels for road transport, aviation, and shipping.

Azelio and ALEC Energy to set up a thermal energy storage site in Masdar City

Azelio, a public Swedish company specialising in thermal energy storage with dispatchable power, has signed an agreement with ALEC Energy to build a renewable energy storage site. Azelio will install a verification project in Abu Dhabi so as to evaluate its energy storage technology for inclusion in Masdar’s renewable energy product portfolio.
