Tag Energy has taken a 100 per cent share in the Lakeside battery energy storage system (BESS) project which has a capacity of 99.9 MW. This is Tag Energy’s fifth investment in the UK this year. The BESS was purchased for around £65 million from RES, and Tag Energy also purchased the 50 MW Roaring Hill Energy Storage Project from RES in October 2021. The Lakeside BESS, which will be built in Drax, North Yorkshire, will begin construction in Q4 2022 and be operational in October 2023. Tag Energy claims that its location on the transmission network will enable an efficient connection to the national grid with lower grid prices.

The UK’s first grid-scale battery storage system directly connected to the transmission network was claimed by Pivot Power, Wärtsilä, and Habitat Energy in June 2021, with the 50 MW lithium-ion BESS being part of a hybrid battery created as part of the Energy Superhub Oxford project. Another Pivot Power transmission-connected BESS, the 50MW/100MWh Sandwell site, is presently under construction, with a similar site in Coventry set to start in early 2022.

Tag Energy’s secured portfolio in the UK currently stands at 270MW/540MWh, following the acquisition of a 60 per cent stake in two 50 MW battery storage projects in 2021, one near Luton, England, and the other near Abernethy, Scotland, in a joint venture with Harmony Energy. In addition, Tag Energy and Tesla began construction on the Hawkers Hill Energy Park battery storage facility in Dorset in September 2021.
