Spain has announced the allocation of about 3 GW of renewable energy capacity in its first renewable energy auction since 2017. The auction was conducted by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and witness the awarding of 2 GW of solar capacity. Additionally, the Ministry also allotted about 1 GW of wind energy under the auction. The winning bidders must complete the solar projects by February 2023 and wind projects by February 2024.
In the auction for solar capacities, X-Elio energy won 315 MW, Iberenova Promociones was allotted 243 MW and Spanish utility Naturgy bagged 196 MW of solar capacity.
The lowest bids were discovered at Euro 14.89 per MWh which was offered by Ignis Dessarrollo for 30 MW of solar capacity. The highest bid was recorded by Enel Power Espana at Euro 28.9 per MWh. The average price recorded was Euro 24.47 per MWh. The lowest bid discovered under the wind power auction was Euro 20 per MWh while the highest was Euro 28.89. The average bid price was Euro 25.31 per MWh.
In September 2020, The Institute for the Diversification and Saving of announced its plans to allocate Euro 181 million to support renewable energy projects in seven autonomous communities of Spain. This was part of a Euro 316 million package for the domestic renewable energy sector.
