According to South Africa’s Department of Mineral Resources and Energy, the sixth round of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Program (REIPPPP) has begun in South Africa. The authorities intend to provide companies 1 GW of utility-scale solar and 1.6 GW of wind in the REIPPPP’s sixth round.

According to the reports, the companies interested in participating in the auction have until April 12, 2022 to download the necessary documentation. Following the recent publication of South Africa’s new Integrated Resource Plan, the procurement exercise is part of a plan to contract approximately 12 GW of capacity.

In March 2021, the REIPPPP scheme’s fifth round was introduced. The South African authorities allocated 2.6 GW of renewable energy capacity across 25 projects with capacities ranging from 75 MW to 140 MW. For a 124 MW wind project to be developed in Hantam, in the Northern Cape region, the lowest bid of ZAR 0.34425 per unit was submitted. The lowest price for solar was ZAR 0.37479 per unit, which was provided for six 75 MW solar parks planned for development in Tokologo, a municipality in the Free State’s Lejweleputswa District.
