Sola Group, a Cape Town-based renewables developer, received authorisation from the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) to build two 100 MW solar power plants in South Africa’s North West region in May 2022.
The corporate power purchase agreement was signed in March 2022 with Tronox, a US-based supplier of titanium products. Through wheeling agreements, the electricity will be supplied to five Tronox facilities in the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. State-owned utility Eskom will be responsible for maintaining the infrastructure required to transmit the electricity. A total of $233.6 million was raised through the projects for development and construction. To raise the funding, Sola collaborated with African Rainbow Energy. The projects will be designed and built by the South African construction company WBHO, with engineering services provided by Sola.
In July 2022, Scatec reached the financial closing for three renewable energy projects in Northern Cape province in South Africa. The three projects are located in Kenhardt and are expected to have a combined solar capacity of 540 MW and battery storage capacity of 225MW/1,140MWh. After this financial closure, Scatec would begin construction of the projects.
