Siemens Gamesa has secured an order to supply 70 wind turbines for a 434 MW wind power plant located in the north-east Rio Grande do Norte state. The contract is to supply SG 5.8-170 turbines with OptimaFlex technology, which have been enhanced to operate at 6.2 MW.

Following a 465 MW contract signed for Bahia in December 2020, this is the third deal for the 5.X in Brazil. The deals were based on the signing of power purchase agreement, signifying the growth of wind power in Brazil in spite of the lack of renewable power auctions in 2020. This order also marks Siemens Gamesa’s sale of 1.21 GW of its new 5.X platform in Brazil, and over 2.2 GW globally. The 2 GW mark has been reached in a record-breaking time. It has been under two years since it was launched to the market in April 2019. The contract for 312 MW wind farm in Tucano, signed in April 2020, was the first contract in Brazil.

The turbines will be locally produced by Siemens Gamesa at its plant in Camacari in the state of Bahia. This will also help support the local economy and increasing the competitiveness of the 5.X platform.

Recently, Siemens Gamesa secured an order in Vietnam for a 117 MW wind farm. Located in the Ninh Thuan province, the 117 MW Hanbaram wind farm is the first renewable energy project to be developed by local independent power producer, Hanbaram Wind Power JSC, and will generate enough electricity to power the demands of 248,000 people.
