Siemens Gamesa has earned a second rotor-nacelle assembly (RNA) IEC type certificate covering tolerance to extreme wind conditions for its 11 MW model. Last year, its 8 MW offshore wind turbine was certified as typhoon-proof. The SG 11.0-200 DD turbine has an 11 MW rated capacity and a 200-metre diameter rotor with 97-metre Siemens Gamesa B97 IntegralBlades. Meanwhile, the SG 8.0-167 DD wind turbine has an 8 MW rated capacity and a 167-metre diameter rotor with 81-metre Siemens Gamesa B81 IntegralBlades. The two models share the same patented Siemens Gamesa direct drive generator technology.

Issued by TÜV NORD, the certification confirms that the two Siemens Gamesa machines can endure Typhoon- or T-class wind rates of up to 57 metres per second for 10 minutes and three-second gusts of up to 79.8 metres per second.

The company also became one of the first turbine manufacturers in the world to acquire a second certificate of this type, and its third offshore wind turbine model has been working towards typhoon resistant certification.
