At least three countries, Japan, Germany and the Netherlands, plan to import Powerfuels products in bulk. The strength of the South African solar and wind resource means that Powerfuels may be produced competitively in South Africa, leading to new export markets. By way of illustration, Japan plans to import hydrogen in bulk from 2030, at a target cost delivered to Japan of US$3/kg, but only requires the imported hydrogen to be carbon-free from 2040 onwards. However, hydrogen may be generated from renewable electricity in South Africa, stored and transported to Japan at or below this target price before 2040.
