Lightsource BP has received permission from the New South Wales Department of Planning and Environment for its 400 MWdc (350 MWac) Wellington North Solar Farm. The new farm will be installed adjacent to the existing 200 MWdc (174 MWac) Wellington Solar Farm and it will be built on a 970-hectare plot of land near Dubbo, New South Wales. The program will use 1.2 million bifacial solar panels, assisting New South Wales in achieving its target of raising its green energy share to more than 60 per cent by 2030 and assisting BP in meeting its net zero goals.

According to Lightsource BP, the aim of this initiative is to assist Australia in transitioning to a lower-carbon future. In a few years, the 600MWdc Wellington solar hub is expected to generate 1,173,000 MWh of renewable energy, enough to power 170,000 Australian homes and save 938,000 tons of carbon emissions annually.

The combined capacity of the Wellington North, Wellington, West Wyalong, and Woolooga solar farms exceeds 900MWdc, making Lightsource BP one of Australia’s biggest solar developers once operational. Lightsource BP has built a substantial pipeline of large-scale solar projects across Australia after joining with BP in 2017 and entering the market in 2018.
