Innergex Renewable Energy, a Canadian power company, has selected Mitsubishi Power’s Emerald Storage Solution for battery energy storage (BESS) projects in Chile’s Atacama Desert. The contracts are for Innergex’s 68 MW Salvador and 50.6 MW San Andres solar plants, which are slated to begin construction next year.

The five-hour energy duration projects will cost $128.5 million in total and have a combined capacity of 85 MW/425 MWh. Once commissioned, the two projects will assist Chile achieve its objective of obtaining 80 per cent of its electricity from renewable assets by 2030 and 100 percent by 2050. The projects will also improve the grid resiliency of the country’s existing transmission and distribution infrastructure.

In March 2022, Mainstream Renewable Power announced that Mitsui & Co., Ltd. agreed to invest EUR €575 million in Mainstream in the form of new common shares. This corresponds to a 27.5 percent equity stake in the company, and would enable Mitsui to take a long-term active role in Mainstream’s growth. Following this transaction, Aker Horizons would own 54.4 percent of Mainstream.
