The policy brief “Preparing Green Jobs for Coal Companies’ Transition Strategies in ASEAN” has been prepared by ASEAN Centre for Energy. Its objective is to analyse the energy transition strategies of companies that are involved in coal mining, coal-fired power generation or related services in ASEAN and the implications for coal industry workers.

According to the brief, despite the increasing consumption and production of coal in ASEAN, and the ongoing development of coal-fired power plants (CFPPs) in the ASEAN Member States (AMS), international coal consumption is decreasing. The net zero pledges affect the zero-emission targets of 3 state-owned utilities in ASEAN which also operate a large fleet of CFPPs. Noting the breadth of outcomes from the coal companies’ transition strategies, 3 AMS had addressed the issues of skill requirements, workers’ rights and inclusive growth in the regulation: the Philippines, Singapore and Malaysia.
