Google has signed a 942 MW power purchase agreement (PPA) with SB Energy Global to power its Midlothian, Texas, data centre as well as the Dallas Cloud area. The tech giant will purchase nearly 75 per cent of the electricity generated by four of SB Energy’s solar power plants that are currently under construction. The 1.2 GW combined capacity Orion I, II, III, and Eiffel solar projects, which are anticipated to go online by mid-2024, will provide the contracted energy. The agreement with SB Energy is part of Google’s commitment to use carbon-free energy in all of its operations by 2030.
SB Energy has expanded its climate infra-tech platform since entering the US market and set a goal to have 10 GW of renewable energy and storage capacity operational or under development by the end of 2025. The company now owns and manages 1.7 GW of solar capacity, and by early 2023, it expects to start building an additional 1.3 GW.
In June 2022, Engie partnered with Google to build an artificial intelligence (AI)-based wind energy solution. Under the agreement, Engie and Google Cloud’s AI Services and Industry Solutions (AIIS) would collaborate to develop a solution that can predict the price and quantity of wind power to be sold in the market.
