Evolugen and Gazifère Inc. have come together to build and operate one of the largest green hydrogen projects for injection into a natural gas distribution network in Quebec. They will develop a 20 MW water electrolysis hydrogen production plant in the Outaouais region. This is part of a collaboration formed to advance the development and use of green hydrogen.
The said facility is planned to be built in the Masson sector of the City of Gatineau and will be located adjacent to Evolugen’s hydroelectric facilities that will be used to power the electrolyser. The project will produce an estimated 425,000 GJ of green hydrogen which will then be injected into Gazifère’s natural gas distribution network.
Evolugen currently owns and operates 61 renewable energy facilities in Canada with a total installed capacity of 1,912 MW. This includes 33 hydroelectric projects, 4 wind farms, and 24 solar plants. Evolugen is a Brookfield Renewable Partners L.P. company which is a leading global publicly traded renewable energy company.
Gazifère is a subsidiary of Enbridge Inc. and was established in the Outaouais region in 1959. It is one of two distributors of natural gas in Quebec and owns and operates a 1,000 km gas supply system. It currently supplies the city of Gatineau as well as the municipality of Chelsea. It aims to become the first natural gas distributor in North America to offer 100% renewable energy portfolio before 2050.
