Engie has announced the signing of renewable energy offtake contracts with Amazon which will see the former develop wind and solar projects of a total capacity of 650 MW. As per the agreement, these capacities will be set up across the United States, Italy, and France. In the United States, 569 MW of the total capacity will be developed in Delaware, Kansas, North Carolina, Ohio, and Virginia. Further, 66 MW will be developed in Italy and 15 MW in France. Engie reports that during construction, each wind project will generate about 300 jobs and each solar project will create about 210 jobs. It is expected that the projects will reach commercial operation in 2021-22.
Amazon has been taking huge leaps in the green energy transition. The company announced that it has invested in about 6.5 GW of renewable energy projects which have the potential to generate 18 MWh of renewable energy annually. With over 127 wind and solar projects, Amazon is now the biggest global buyer of renewable energy projects. The company also signed a power purchase agreement with ACCIONA for 641 MW of solar projects. The projects will be developed in Illinois, Kentucky, and Ohio. The projects represent ACCIONA’s growth strategy to install 5 GW of new renewable energy capacity worldwide between 2020 and 2024
ENGIE is the largest private renewable energy developer in Brazil with an installed capacity of 10,211 MW from 61 power plants. In 2019, Engie was the global leader in securing clean energy power purchase agreements as it signed contracts for over 2,000 MW across the United States and Europe. The current projects are aligned with Amazon’s pledge to power 100 per cent of its operations through renewable energy by 2030 and reach carbon neutrality by 2040. Engie also expressed the need for global players and local communities to make bold commitments for a greener future.
