Enel Green Power and Saras signed an agreement to develop a green hydrogen project in Sardinia. The project involves a 20 MW electrolyzer which will be powered by renewable energy produced onsite. The green hydrogen produced by the electrolyzer will be used as a raw material in the Saras refinery at the Sarroch industrial site in the province of Cagliari.

The site at Sarroch has been chosen due to its size, location and structural characteristics which are suitable to develop and host a green hydrogen production project with potential for development and growth. Enel Green plans to develop green hydrogen projects in the coming years. To this end the company has started looking at new business models that include the supply of green hydrogen for the decarbonization of industrial sectors, with partnerships and projects already under development in Chile, Spain, the United States and Italy.

Meanwhile, Saras has technological capabilities and know-how in the production and management of hydrogen, and currently has several studies underway to explore various decarbonisation processes in the production and use of green hydrogen.

The global green hydrogen market is expected to reach a market size of USD 2,569.7 million by 2028 and register a high CAGR during the forecast period, according to a latest report by Reports and Data. According to the report, the green hydrogen market is witnessing increasing growth due to rising concerns regarding climate and growing shift towards renewable energy. Continuous innovation and policy attention will be essential to make green hydrogen viable as part of a sustainable energy mix. Regulations, market design, and the costs of power and electrolyser production will all come into play.
