Eoliennes en Mer Manche Normandie, a consortium of EDF Renewables and Maple Power, will build a 1 GW offshore wind facility known as Centre Manche 1 off the coast of Normandy, France. The project company has been announced as the winner of an offshore wind tender launched by the French Ministry of Energy Transition in January 2021. The offshore facility, which will be constructed 32 km off the coast of the Normandy departments of Manche and Calvados, will be able to supply more than 1.5 million people with all of their annual electricity requirements.
The French government’s target of installing roughly 50 offshore wind farms with a combined 40 GW of power production capacity by 2050 will be aided by the new offshore wind project. The Centre Manche 1 project’s planning and permissions will be completed in the ensuing years, and commissioning is anticipated to take place by 2030.
EDF Renewables is a division of EDF Group, while Maple Power is a joint partnership between Enbridge and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board. The Centre Manche 1 initiative will be the third in Normandy and the fifth overall for EDF Renewables, Maple Power, and their shareholders in France. The 480 MW wind farm off the coast of Saint-Nazaire became fully operational in November 2022, while the 500 MW Fécamp and 450 MW Calvados offshore wind farms, and the 25 MW Provence Grand Large floating offshore pilot project, are in their construction phase.
