Dominion Energy Virginia has requested approval from state regulators for nearly two dozen new solar and energy storage projects with a combined capacity of 800 MW. In the proposal, Dominion Energy Virginia will own and operate 10 solar and energy storage facilities with a combined capacity of around 500 MW. The proposal also includes power purchase agreements (PPAs) with 13 independent developers’ solar and energy storage projects, with a combined capacity of more than 300 MW. Through a competitive solicitation process, the PPAs were chosen.
Furthermore, the Virginia State Corporation Commission must approve the projects, which are a part of Dominion Energy Virginia’s third annual clean energy filing. The proposed utility-owned projects will require local and state permits before construction may begin. If approved, the projects are anticipated to be finished between 2023 and 2025, and the average residential customer’s monthly bill would increase by $0.38. Reportedly, construction may create more than $920 million in economic benefits for Virginia and nearly 4,800 clean energy jobs.
In December 2021, Dominion Energy ordered 176 wind turbines from Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy for the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind Project. The 2.6 GW project is the largest offshore wind farm currently under construction in the US. It is expected to generate enough energy to power 660,000 homes when it is completed in 2026.
