The International Council on Clean Transportation has published a working paper on the “Cost of electric commercial vans and pickup trucks in the United States through 2040.” This paper presents a total cost of ownership assessment of battery-electric Class 2b and 3 commercial vehicles between 2020 and 2040 benchmarked against the corresponding costs of gasoline and diesel powertrains.

To assist in understanding the state of the market and its expected evolution, this paper analyses the projected cost of battery-electric and plug-in hybrid electric Class 2b and 3 vehicles in the United States, focusing on the estimated year in which both purchase price and total cost of ownership parity is achieved relative to their gasoline and diesel counterparts. A bottom-up cost component analysis with particular focus on the battery prices alongside other electric propulsion systems has been conducted.
