Avangrid Renewables announced the commissioning of its 154.8 MW Tatanka Ridge Wind Farm. The project consists of 56 wind turbines and is located in Deuel County, S.D., northeast of Brookings. Further, the wind farm is owned by Tatanka Ridge Wind, LLC, a joint venture between Avangrid Renewables and WEC Energy Group. The wind farm has penned a power purchase agreement with the Dairyland Power Cooperative for 51.6 MW of its capacity. The remaining capacity will be contracted to the WEC Energy Group in Milwaukee.

The Tatanka Ridge area comprises 18,000 acres of primarily corn and soybean farms and cattle ranches. In addition to land leases and taxes, the wind farm will provide $1.7 million in benefits to the local economy annually until it is decommissioned. Previously, the Dairyland Power Cooperative and Avangrid Renewables have collaborated twice before on the Barton wind project and the Winnebago wind project in Iowa.

In January 2021, Avangrid received permits for the construction of its proposed $950m New England Clean Energy Connect transmission project. The transmission line will span a length of 145 miles and has a capacity of 1.2 GW. In partnership with Hydro-Quebec, the project will also connect a hydropower facility in Quebec, Canada to the New England energy grid. Further, the project is expected to generate about 1600 jobs and provide $200 million in upgrades to the energy grid. It will also reduce three million tonnes of emissions annually.
